Can you really get a free iPhone from the government?
The government does not hand out iPhones directly. Instead, the FCC's Lifeline program gives a monthly discount of $9.25 (up to $34.25 on Tribal lands) toward phone service for low-income households. Lifeline providers like Phone Government apply that discount so your plan costs $0 — and we include a free device, including iPhone models, when you enroll with us.
That is why people call it a free iPhone government phone: the service is supported by Lifeline, and the iPhone is provided free by your Lifeline provider.
Which free iPhone models can I choose?
Our current free government iPhone lineup includes:
- iPhone 13 — 5G, 128GB, dual camera, OLED display
- iPhone 11 — 6.1-inch screen, Face ID, 64GB
- iPhone 8 — compact, Touch ID, wireless charging
- iPhone 7 — simple starter iPhone for calls and texts
Models may be new or certified pre-owned and are subject to availability. If your first choice is out of stock, we'll offer a comparable iPhone before shipping.
Who qualifies for a free government iPhone?
You qualify for a free iPhone with Lifeline if you or someone in your household participates in one of these programs:
- SNAP (food stamps / EBT)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (including Section 8)
- Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension
- Tribal programs for residents of Tribal lands
- Household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines
Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household. See the full Lifeline eligibility guide.
Free iPhone vs. free Android phone: which is better?
Choose an iPhone if you already use Apple apps, iMessage or FaceTime, or want a phone that is simple to learn. Choose an Android phone such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip if you want a foldable design or Google apps. Both include the same free Lifeline plan. Compare all free government smartphones.
Can I get a free iPhone 15, 16 or 17?
The newest iPhone models are usually not offered free through Lifeline providers because of their high cost. If you already own a newer iPhone, you can bring your own phone and use our free Lifeline service with a free SIM card — you keep your phone and your number.
How long does it take to get my free iPhone?
Most applications are reviewed within minutes to 2 business days once the Lifeline National Verifier confirms your eligibility. After approval, your iPhone ships free in 1–2 business days and usually arrives within 3–7 business days.
